This colorful wedding in Oaxaca, Mexico mirrored the lives of Anna + Alfonso becoming one by incorporating the special personal details, family heirlooms, and exciting Mexican wedding traditions. The wedding ceremony and reception embodied the colors, tastes, sounds, traditions, and spirit of the groom’s home country, Mexico, while also paying homage to the bride’s Southern roots by using touches of rustic decor. Alfonso wore a peacock feather bow tie from Charleston, South Carolina. Alfonso and his mom alo shared an epic first dance to an Edith Piaf remix to reference his French heritage.

Anna + Alfonso wanted their guests to wake up the next morning saying “that was the best wedding I have ever been to” without any doubt. The bride and groom were very intentional about choosing the music, food, drinks, and activities leading up to the wedding so that the guests got a genuine experience of Mexico in addition to attending the wedding ceremony.

When Alfonso popped the question Anna said,

“Yes! Can we get married in Oaxaca?!”

We were so lucky to be able to photograph in the Botanic Garden in Oaxaca City. It houses the most ancient and beautiful cacti and gorgeous textures to play with.

The Calenda, a wedding parade with huge puppets, live music, dancers escorted the wedding party and guests from the church to the reception.

Anna + Alfonso cut the cake with the same knife Anna’s parents used to cut their wedding cake. The knife was already engraved with her parents’ names and their wedding anniversary, and Anna + Alfonso’s names and wedding date added to the engraving.

The after-party lasted until 5am, and the guests were served Mexican street food (esquites and tlayudas) throughout the night to keep everyone fueled and the party going strong.
